Industrial Visit to BEML

On 31st May 2025, as part of the curriculum and experiential learning approach, 23 MBA students and five faculty members of Ahalia School of Management undertook an industrial visit to BEML at Kanjikode, Palakkad. The team started from the campus at 9.30 AM and reached BEML at 10.00 AM. The visit aimed to provide insights into the workings of a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), understand manufacturing operations and observe industrial practices relevant to management studies. BEML is a leading manufacturing company under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. It operates in segments such as mining & construction, rail & metro and defence. The Kanjikode unit primarily focuses on the manufacturing of defence vehicles – the BEML Tatra truck. The event was coordinated by Mr Abhijith V, Officer – PR, BEML Palakkad. During the initial part of the visit, the students observed the stringent security protocols observed by BEML to allow visitors to the plant area. As part of providing an overview about BEML as an organisation and with specifics about the BEML Palakkad plant, students were shown two videos. Mr Sachin and Mr Prasad from BEML explained about the five-stage manufacturing process of the Tatra truck and the unique features of Tatra Truck, through the aid of a flow-chart. Following the theoretical inputs, the students were taken to the production plant. At the production plant, students observed the fabrication and assembly of the Tatra truck and other vehicles. The plant follows a well-structured production line with high standards in quality control. The students also observed vehicles undergoing testing. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and gain insights into industrial challenges and solutions. Students expressed that the visit was highly informative and enriching, and for some, it was their first exposure to a production plant. The visit offered a real-world perspective on industrial operations and allowed them to contextualize their academic knowledge. It enhanced their understanding of industrial functions, especially in a public sector context and contributed to their managerial learning journey. The visit ended at 11.30 PM and the team reached ASM at 12.00 Noon.
